ABOUT

Leonardo Vinci’s Polish opera Gismondo, first performed at Rome’s Teatro delle Dame in 1727, is a masterpiece that has all the prerequisites to enter the standard repertoire. Even its libretto, with its family constellations full of Freudian convulsions and occult practices, goes beyond common opera seria conventions. It is about an unpredictable tyrant who drives the world order to the brink of the abyss with a policy that does not follow the rules of reason and service to mankind, but erratic impulses and superstitious rituals. Vinci’s scenes are reminiscent of therapy sessions. They accompany their heroines and heroes into the dungeons of the soul and onto Shakespearean battlefields where the living rise from the mountains of corpses.
